As event artists, we’re generally more concerned with the act of drawing than where it happens, but this quarter I wanted to write a note in appreciation of my all-time favorite event type which is parties for kids and teens! All events being equal, this demographic definitely has a special place in my heart.
For the why, first let’s dispel the myth that kids can’t sit still and therefore make for difficult guests. In my experience, young guests are some of the best sitters. Usually it’s the parents who are more antsy, and also babies. Which is completely understandable because parents are usually keeping an eye on the kids, and of course babies like to keep an eye on everything else.
Whatever the reason, overall the kids I’ve met have been exceptional models and a joy to chat with every time. I often hear adults getting down on themselves about being unable to draw “even a stick figure” (to which I feel they don’t give themselves enough creativity credit or never received the encouragement they deserved), but with kids the self-judgment is not yet so deeply ingrained. They’re still excited about their own projects in a way that reminds me I once had that innate ability to be creatively fearless, and maybe can still! What’s not to admire?
So, just a small thank you to all the younger ones who’ve sat with this old-ish lady for a drawing so far. I know many of you are out there making artwork as we speak, and I would honestly love to see it out in the world someday.
Also! I’m sharing some of my own kid artwork below because cringe culture is dead and it’s long due to hype my inner child
Until next quarter, hope to draw with you soon!
